Abstract
Die katholische und evangelische Kirche in Deutschland ist mit einem Bedeutungsverlust und sinkenden Ressourcen konfrontiert. Eine zielgerichtete Steuerung der komplexen kirchlichen Strukturen und ihrer Verwaltungen gewinnt daher an Bedeutung. Kirchliche Führungskräfte benötigen relevante (quantitative) Informationen als Entscheidungsunterstützung, um ihre Organisationen bestmöglich am christlichen Sendungsauftrag auszurichten. Aus diesem Grund etablieren kirchliche Verwaltungen zunehmend Controlling-Fähigkeiten. Dabei sind spezifische Herausforderungen zu überwinden. Die Grundlage diese Studie bilden die Befragung und ein Workshop mit Controlling-Verantwortlichen katholischer Diözesen sowie die Reflexion relevanter Theorien und eigene Beratungserfahrung der Autoren. Aufbauend beschreibt diese am Beispiel katholischer Diözesen die aktuelle Situation der Umsetzung des Controllings, leitet vier spezifische Herausforderungen ab und entwickelt vier entsprechende Lösungsansätze. Die sich ergebenden Implikationen für die Praxis münden in einem vierschrittigen Einführungsprozess für ein kirchliches Controlling. Diese Studie möchte Führungskräfte in kirchlichen Organisationen und deren Verwaltungen unterstützen, ein erfolgreiches Controlling aufzubauen und damit einen Beitrag zur zukünftigen Entwicklung der christlichen Kirchen in Deutschland leisten.

The Catholic and Protestant churches in Germany are confronted with a loss of relevance and declining resources. Goal-oriented steering of the complex church structures and their administrations is therefore becoming increasingly important. Church leaders need relevant (quantitative) information to support their decision-making to best align their organizations with the Christian mission. For this reason, church administrations are increasingly establishing controlling capabilities. There are specific challenges to overcome in this process. This study is based on a survey and a workshop with controllers from Catholic dioceses as well as a reflection on relevant theories and the authors‘ own consulting experience. Based on the example of Catholic dioceses, the study describes the current situation regarding the implementation of controlling functions, identifies four specific challenges and develops four corresponding solutions. The resulting practical implications lead to a four-step introduction process for church controlling. The study aims to support managers in church organizations and their administrations in setting up a successful controlling system and thus contributing to the future development of Christian churches in Germany.
